Daily News Buildiing, 42nd Street and 2nd Ave.

The Daily News Building was the home of the New York Daily News and was the home office for the Superman movies. It became a national landmark in 1989.
Daily News Building - 42nd Streeet

The Daily News Building's art deco exterior is made of polychrome brick with red and black spandrels between the windows, which gives it its modern look of the day. It was this facade that created the backdrop for many movies, including the Superman series, where it became the Daily Planet Building.

It was a common setting for our photographer to capture New York's new skyscraper additions. Built by architect Raymond Hood, he created the building to house both it's printing presses and it's editorial offices in the same complex.

The 3rd Ave El populates the foreground in this photo. One of the few pictures of this subway line that Joe has caught on film. In November, 2007, the green light was given to continue construction of the new Second Ave subway. The elevated subway lines have since been demolished in Manhattan.
