The Daily News Building's art deco exterior is made of polychrome brick with red and black spandrels between the windows, which gives it
its modern look of the day. It was this facade that created the backdrop for many movies, including the Superman series,
where it became the Daily Planet Building.
It was a common setting for our photographer to capture New York's new skyscraper additions. Built by architect
Raymond Hood, he created the building to house both it's printing presses and it's editorial offices

The 3rd Ave El populates the foreground in this photo. One of the few pictures of this subway line that Joe has
caught on film. In November, 2007, the green light was given to continue construction of the new
Second Ave subway. The elevated subway lines have since been demolished in Manhattan.
