Herald Square Looking North, 1927 |
The New York Herald was headquartered at 35th Street and hence, the name. Although the newspaper is gone, the name remains and Herald Square is now known as a major shopping hub with Macys still maintaining the distinction as the world's largest department store. New Yorkers, as well as hundreds of thousands of visitors come to this area yearly.
The building in the foreground was the McAplan Hotel. Now the Herald Towers luxury rental apartment building, located on the corner of 34th Street and 6th Ave. The man at the bottom of this picture appears to have a keen eye on the person photographing him. This 30+ year old man would probably be over 140 years old today. The woman in the background seems to be holding on to her hat. Must have been a cold wintery day. The history in this photo is pronounced, as not only is the 6th Ave. El clearly visible, but so is the on coming train!
